Deputy Superintendent

 

Position Title: Deputy Superintendent

 

Pay Grade: A-8                                            Period of Employment: 12 months

 

Description Approved: 4/2/24                 FLSA Status: Exempt

 

Supervised by and/or Reports to: Superintendent 

 

General Responsibilities: Assists the Superintendent by providing leadership for effective school and division operations and facilitating the best possible educational programs throughout the Division.

 

Essential Duties:

  • Supervises division departments: Student Achievement, Student Services, Transportation, School Food Services, and Facilities.
  • Provides advice, counsel, and support to the Superintendent and Cabinet, Directors, Supervisors, and instructional personnel.
  • Develop objectives for the Division's curriculum and instruction and the elementary and secondary levels of regular and special education in alignment with the division's overall strategic priorities.
  • Designs strategies to achieve short- and long-range goals that align to the Division's Strategic Plan.
  • Organizes and directs assigned functions to achieve stated strategic goals.
  • Ensures the development of objectives for the Division's elementary and secondary school operations to meet overall Division achievement goals.
  • Supervises and monitors student achievement review processes and their linkage to instructional improvement, including communicating with VDOE staff and attending VDOE-scheduled meetings.
  • Participates in the development of the budget and capital improvement plan.
  • Confers with attorneys concerning legal issues and litigation and provides direction regarding legal and policy interpretations.
  • Communicates/problem-solves with Division parents and other community members.
  • Attends meetings of the School Board and reports on pertinent matters as appropriate.
  • Oversees and advises leadership development and adult professional learning for Division leaders.
  • Possesses current knowledge of educational research and best practices and contributes to developing and implementing Division policies and regulations.
  • Oversees Division-wide special projects, as designated by the Superintendent.
  • Leads in the development, oversight, and evaluation of initiatives and projects related to safety and security operations.
  • Serves as the Superintendent designee in the absence of the Division Superintendent.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Requisite Education and Experience:

 

  • Knowledge of all aspects of standards-based curriculum and instruction, including reading instruction, special education, gifted education, ESOL, Fine Arts, CTE, and developing professional learning communities.
  • Demonstrate a strong working knowledge of instructional practice, student learning, strategic planning, Division operations, and continuous school improvement.
  • Possession of leadership skills, qualities, and personal characteristics necessary to work effectively with students, teachers, parents, administrators, and the general public.
  • Ability to manage fiscal and physical resources and to direct the operation of abroad range of activities to carry out instructional support activities successfully.
  • Ability to establish and maintain successful working relationships with staff, students, and citizens.
  • Ability to communicate school system policies and programs to the general public, media, and government officials.
  • Must possess a Master’s Degree in Education, School Administration, or Curriculum and Instruction.
  • Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision PreK-12.
  • Division Superintendent License preferred.
  • Five (5) years of successful teaching experience.
  • Five (5) years of educational administration and/or supervisory experience as a principal or central office administrator.

 

Physical Requirements:

 

Must have the use of sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office-related equipment, such as, but not limited to, a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
