Career Development Specialist

This is a full-time on-site role for a Career Development Specialist at Western Michigan University. The Career Development Specialist will be responsible for providing career coaching to students and alumni - assisting them with their job searches, and facilitating workshops and events related presentations on career development topics. The Career Development Specialist works as part of a team of four Career Development Specialists within the larger Career and Student Employment Services Office.

Major Duties

  • Provides one-on-one coaching to current students and recent alumni looking for internships, full-time jobs, or student jobs on job search strategies including resume creation/review, finding appropriate job openings, interviewing techniques, and salary negotiations.
  • Plans, develops and implements programs, seminars and events to teach students best practices for job searches on topics such as resumes and interviews.
  • Promotes a strengths-based career philosophy, helping students develop and highlight the strengths they bring to a position or career.
  • Administers and interprets career-related assessments, including those to identify talents and strengths. Coach individual students based on assessment outcomes.
  • Hires, trains, evaluates and supervises staff of 5-10 student Career Peer Educators to provide drop-in resume reviews and career advice in four different locations.
  • Assists with department/college/university major events including job fairs, orientation, and admission events.
