The Madison County Public Health Department seeks a full-time Public Health Sanitarian. The term "public health sanitarian" shall mean a person who applies the prin­ciples of the natural and social sciences for the detection, evaluation, control and management of those factors in the environment which influence the public’s health.  The incumbent performs, under supervision, professional activities which may include the investigation and inspection of the non-engineering aspects of environmental health control.  The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Director of Environmental Health as well as general supervision of the Public Health Director. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate technical personnel.  The incumbent does related work as required.

***THIS IS A TESTED CIVIL SERVICE POSITION***

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Either:

  1. Possession of a Bachelor's Degree, or higher, including thirty (30) credit hours in the natural sciences, of which not more than twelve (12) credit hours may be in the applied sciences; or

 Five years of experience as a public health technician deemed satisfactory by the local Public Health Director and have satisfactorily completed a public health training course approved by the State Health Department.

*       Minimum Qualifications derived from Title 10 NYCRR Section 11.111.

**     The term natural science shall mean a science such as biology, chemistry, or physics that deals with the objects, phenomena, or laws of nature and the physical world.  It shall include all physical and biological sciences.

***   The term applied science shall mean science based courses in environmental technology, sanitation technology, medical technology, public health, infection control or food science.

NOTE:  Degrees must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.  If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, the candidate must provide independent verification of equivalency.  A list of acceptable companies who provide this service can be found on the internet at http://www.cs.ny.gov/jobseeker/degrees.cfm.  Candidates will be required to pay the evaluation fee.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

A.     Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license at the time of appointment and maintenance of said license for the duration of appointment.

B.     Candidates must satisfactorily complete a public health training course approved by the State Health Department within two years of appointment.
