Information Systems Engineer

Space Dynamics Laboratory is seeking an experienced Information Systems Engineer to design, purchase, implement, and secure systems and associated applications, services, and components.

The selected candidate will identify customer-specific system requirements, industry best practices, as well as any security or compliance requirements and will design an information system to meet those requirements. Candidate may also review existing systems to ensure proper they were properly engineered and still meet all requirements. Candidate should understand how to take an information system from proposal to operation. This is an on-site, non-remote position for our North Logan, UT location.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Follows all applicable SDL engineering processes
  • Responsible for the design and implementation of IT information systems that require the integration of diverse and complex components resulting in highly available, resilient, and redundant systems
  • Provides specific, detailed information for selection, implementation techniques, and tools for the most efficient solution to meet business needs, including present and future capacity requirements, facility requirements (including floor layout, power, cooling, network connectivity), data storage, backup, monitoring, etc.
  • Gather and synthesize system requirements from internal and external customers defining operational requirements including integration with other systems or components
  • Coordinates with others to ensure the logical and systematic conversion of requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints while evaluating and recommending other possible, alternative solutions.
  • Reviews and assists in enhancing current engineering processes
  • Serves as a peer reviewer for complex information systems designs
  • Responsible for engineering documentation of assigned systems and solutions
  • Evaluates vendor capabilities to provide required products or services
  • Conducts research on emerging products, services, protocols, and standards
  • Provides technical expertise on projects and proposal efforts
  • Provide expertise in defining and implementing best practices to meet or exceed mission needs for 24/7 operations.

  • Facility requirements (floor plan, power, cooling, etc.)
  • System cost estimates

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or related field
  • 8+ years IT Systems Administration experience
  • Experience architecting, designing, and engineering information systems – Candidate will be asked to talk through these experiences
  • Possess a working knowledge of networking, systems, cyber, and/or cloud technologies
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to perform engineering trade-offs between customer requirements, schedule deadlines, program funding, and engineering best practices
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment on collaborative efforts involving both internal and external team members
  • Competent in managing budgets and schedule
  • Must be able to obtain a DoD security clearance
  • Must be a US citizen
  • Must be able to travel, though not a normal expectation
  • DoD 8140 compliant (SDL will help obtain)


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with diagramming tools (ie. Visio, draw.io, Cameo)
  • Active Top Secret (please disclose any clearance when applying as all are beneficial)
  • Demonstrated ability to solve large and complex issues.
  • Proven capability to develop and execute hardware and software configurations for information systems.
