Summer STEAM Lead Instructional Assistant

Description:
UChicago STEM Education is a research and development center focused on PreK-Grade 12 STEM Education. UChicago STEM Education is working in partnership with Bright Star Community Outreach to enhance educational opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics for K-8 students in Bronzeville as part of their new STEAM DREAM partnership. The Lead Instructional Assistant will work alongside teachers to assist with summer STEAM programming for K-8 students at Bright Star’s TURN Center, located in Bronzeville and will be the primary liaison between the Program Coordinator and the other instructional assistants. 

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Serve as liaison between Program Coordinator and other instructional assistants
  • Assist students with STEAM activities in accordance with curricula and instructor’s lesson plans. 
  • Communicate regularly with the Program Coordinator and instructors about individual student progress, successes, concerns, and updates.  
  • Greet students, parents, and guardians.
  • Support prep and cleanup of facility before and after science experiments and other STEAM activities.
  • Assist with materials organization and inventorying
  • Demonstrate respect and maintain positive working relationships with students, families, and instructors.
  • Work within BSCO and UChicago policies, adhering to confidentiality about student information and all other agency guidelines and ethics regarding the treatment of students.
  • Participate in paid, 6-hour training session prior to session 

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with students (preferably K-8) in an educational setting   
  • Competence and confidence in one or more STEM disciplines
  • Group facilitation skills, including experience with team building and positive skill reinforcement 
  • Excellent organizational skills and interpersonal communication skills  
  • Cooperative manner and the ability to work as part of a team 
  • A commitment to assisting in all children’s ongoing educational achievement and academic success 
  • Criminal Background Check, including fingerprinting, is mandatory
  • Must be able to travel off-campus to the TURN Center in Bronzeville 

Mental Demands:

Must be able to work with a variety of individuals.   Must have excellent communication skills.

Hours range per week:
SESSION 1: 20 hours/week (8:30 am – 12:30 pm), M-F from June 10 -21
SESSION 2: 20 hours/week (8:30 am.- 12:30 pm), M-F from Aug 5 - 16
