Immigration Intern


 

 
The Immigration Intern works in collaboration with the MCC East Coast South Florida Program Coordinator. The Intern will work with Immigration Direct Service program, clients, and partner churches/organizations, be responsible for daily program administration support and new asylum seekers applications. The Intern will also work with a site where partners are helping the newcomer is part of this role. The Intern will be working two days a week. The Intern’s primary work location will be at the MCC East Coast Florida Office. As part of this experience, the Intern will be given the opportunity to learn about the broader work of Mennonite Central Committee. The position of Immigration Intern is a learning/leadership development opportunity.

Essential:

  •  
    • Must be fluent in English
    • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
    • Ability to work with people from diverse constituent groups.
    • Motivated to work and learn.
    • Proficient in using email and Microsoft office.
    • Detail-oriented
    • High level of personal initiative and the ability to work independently.
    • Working knowledge in Spanish.
    • Valid driver license
    • Experience and/or aptitude to travel alone via public transportation (train, bus, subway)
    • Ability to keep client details and other sensitive information confidential.
    • An understanding of issues and challenges faced by immigrants.

 
Employment eligibility: Legally eligible to work in the U.S. MCC. Offers of employment are subject to a successful criminal background check(s). 
  
Preferred: 

  • Bilingual Spanish/English fluency
  • College student: Any one currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program or post-graduate program in Law, Psychology, Social work, Intercultural Studies, or Social Sciences or equivalent.

Key Responsibilties

Specific Tasks and Duties:  

  • Complete intake with potential clients.  
  • Complete basic applications
  • Assist with preparation of documents for court and/or USCIS.
  • Legal research and analysis
  • File maintenance
  • Draft legal documents.
  • Attend immigration presentations.
  • Other duties as assigned on a temporary basis. 


Travel expectations: Occasional local visits. Meet with refugees at Iglesia Rescate once a week or as needed to complete basic paperwork.

Physical Activity/Demands:

  • ​​Constantly​ remaining in a stationary position, often standing, or sitting for prolonged periods of time.  
  • moving about to accomplish tasks or move from one worksite to another.
