Radio Frequency Infrastructure Engineer

This Radio Frequency Infrastructure Engineer (Electrical Engineer-Advanced) position serves as the technical expert of the most complex tower infrastructure systems in the State of Wisconsin.

This position will work remotely from the selected candidate's home location. This position requires independent statewide travel throughout Wisconsin to remote locations and onsite meetings on a regular basis.

Position Summary

This position works within the Division of State Patrol, Bureau of Network Engineering and Data Infrastructure (BNEDI). This position serves as the technical expert of the most complex tower infrastructure systems, including electrical and/or electronic systems, backup power generator systems, grounding, structural, radio frequency (RF) antenna sub-systems, and microwave path engineering.

Applying a broad knowledge of complex engineering principles, this position provides leadership, guidance and support for the BNEDI programs, including oversight and coordination of technical tower site construction activities across the state, engineering analysis of radio frequency systems including microwave, project management and collaboration with BNEDI regional supervisors, field audits of tower site facilities, and general oversight of technical contracts and tower-related lease agreements. The position interfaces directly with other engineering staff, IS and IT staff, and program managers both internal and external to the Department. 

Other responsibilities include:

  • Provide engineering oversight and state-wide expertise to Communications Construction Projects including:
    • Evaluating sub-surface conditions at current and prospective tower sites.
    • Designing and inspecting specialized lightning protection grounding systems.
  • Provide engineering support and guidance to statewide infrastructure projects or enhancements including:
    • Documenting and maintaining records of communications towers.
    • Conducting engineering analyses of radio propagation. 

Salary Information 

This position is in schedule-range (14-13) with an annual salary of $87,360-$101,067, plus a $1.00 hourly add on for being a licensed Professional Engineer. A twelve month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

Qualifications

Qualified applicants must have all the following:

  • Upon application, candidate must have graduated from an ABET accredited program with a 4-year degree (or Master's or Ph.D.) in an engineering field OR possess a PE license (registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Wisconsin) OR possess an EIT (Engineer-In-Training) license OR have documentation from the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services that deems the individual a professional engineer and qualified to engage in professional engineering practices.
  • Experience or training with civil, structural, geological, and/or electrical engineering principles or practices.
  • Experience or training working with project management techniques such as project design, planning, documentation, tracking, and/or information sharing.

In additional to all of the above, a well-qualified candidate will have experience with one or more of the following: 

  • Experience interpreting broad engineering (electrical, structural, and/or civil) construction specifications, drawings, and blueprints.
  • Experience working with Telecommunications Industry Association or Electronic Industries Alliance standards regulating tower construction.
  • Experience with telecommunications project management principles.
