Health Science Librarian

JOB OBJECTIVES:

Parker University Library seeks an innovative, enthusiastic, and user-focused individual to provide comprehensive health science reference, research, and instructional support. The Health Science Librarian collaborates across all academic programs to enhance research, teaching and learning by developing and delivering information literacy instruction, faculty development workshops, as well as providing scholarly guidance. Additionally, the librarian facilitates the full interlibrary loan resource-sharing operations for the institution ensuring seamless access to scholarly materials.

 

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

The position responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides instruction and support through workshops, course sessions, and online modules on topics like database searching, scholarly publishing, reference management, evidence-based practices, systematic reviews, and/or QEP-related topics with a focus on health and information databases.
  • Conducts database searches and provides consultations and support for faculty research, including assistance with literature searches, systematic reviews, data management, and evidence appraisal.
  • Seeks and fosters collaborative opportunities across university departments, working with faculty and researchers to integrate library resources into curricula and research projects, while advancing institutional curricular needs and promoting a strong information culture within health science programs.
  • Promotes library and health science resources through outreach initiatives, including newsletters, presentations, and social media to enhance information literacy and increase awareness of available services.
  • Creates and maintains digital library resource guides and other online content or materials to promote information literacy.
  • Actively contribute to innovative library engagement, providing library instruction and outreach across the university community. Participate in the assessment of library services and programs to improve patron experience and service quality.
  • Manages full operation of library resource sharing functions, interlibrary loan, document delivery, and other digitization services related to providing access to resources in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Interprets resource sharing rules and agreements as well as copyright law and guidelines for local applications to ensure compliance.
  • Maintains excellent customer service by assisting patrons with point-of-need research consultations and reference inquiries both in person and virtually. Provides tours of library facilities as needed.
  • Serves as a liaison on scholarly communication matters.
  • Stays up to date with emerging trends, technologies and methodologies in health science research, information literacy instruction, resource sharing, and health science librarianship, attending professional development sessions as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Library Services.

 

WHAT YOU WILL NEED: 

 

EDUCATION/EXPERTISE:

  • Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited master’s program or equivalent work experience in research and systematic inquiry.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with faculty on systematic reviews, literature searches, and evidence-based practice support.
  • Ability to design and deliver instructional programs, research support and workshops face-to-face, online and/or in a blended format for faculty and students.
  • Familiarity with key health sciences databases such as PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and others.
  • Experience using Ex Libris Alma, PrimoVE and OCLC WorldShare ILL for circulation and resource sharing functions; preferred.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS/ETC:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships across diverse user groups and departments.
  • Excellent public relations, verbal, and written communication skills are required to work effectively with faculty and multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Proven experience in successfully managing multiple simultaneous projects and creating and implementing long-term plans to achieve results.
  • Knowledge of library policies, copyright law, fair use standards, interlibrary loan concepts and principles.
  • Proficient in software applications common in higher education environments, such as the Microsoft Suite. Graphic Design experience is preferred.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position is a primarily on-campus role.
  • Visual acuity to use a keyboard and view a computer terminal.  Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp.
  • Job is sedentary, requiring work hours sitting in a chair though it may require ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; or the ability to stand and walk.  Dexterity with ability to reach books on six (6) foot shelves.
  • This may include lifting, pulling, pushing, bending or squatting and the ability to occasionally lift, carry and/or move or exert light to medium weight or force up to (12) pounds.
