Floating School Health LPN

Under the supervision of the Public Health Nurse in the Health Department’s School Health Services Division, is responsible for providing basic nursing care services and supervision for students , in a Fairfax County Public School setting. Floating LPNs are assigned by the School Health Administrative Assistant to provide coverage in a variety of school locations across Fairfax County for long term, same day, or on an as needed basis. This position assesses and determines students’ health status and follows appropriate protocols to provide care, screening, and documentation. Monitors, and manages students with acute or chronic disease and/or disabilities and documents the care services provided in accordance with standard protocol. Manages medications, routine school health room activities and reviews and updates student health records daily. Assists in the monitoring and updating of student’s individual care plan. Compiles and submits health room statistics and reports using computer data entry skills. Maintains current BLS certification and nurse licensing requirements. Responds to medical emergencies and performs CPR and first aid.

Note: This is a non-merit E-status position. It cannot exceed 1560 hours per calendar year. Appointees are eligible for limited employee benefits (including medical, vision and dental insurance coverage) and participation in flexible spending programs, but not eligible to earn leave, holiday pay or retirement benefits.

Minimum Qualifications: 

Graduation from an accredited Practical Nursing program; plus, one year of experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

 

Certificates and Licenses Required: 

Possession of current license or a multistate licensure privilege to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The incumbent must possess a valid motor vehicle driver's license.

Some positions within this classification will require additional certifications and licenses, as defined by the position description and posted in job announcements.

Necessary Special Requirements:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a Criminal Background Check and a Child Protective Services Registry to the satisfaction of the employer. Contingent upon the area of assignment, some positions within this class will require a National Provider Identifier. Must be able to travel to various school locations across Fairfax County. 
 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience providing health services to school aged children in ethnically diverse populations.
  • Must have a high level of integrity and discretion in handling confidential information and professionalism in dealing with students, parents and colleagues.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal abilities to communicate effectively and clearly with a diverse population and various stakeholders 
  • Work independently and on interdisciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency with technology and the ability to learn and adapt to new systems, software, Microsoft Office, and digital tools as needed.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to ensure the safety and well-being of students. 
  • Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability to respond effectively to situations and meet public health goals.
  • Experience reviewing and administering childhood vaccinations.

Physical Requirements:
Employee is required to walk, stand, sit, bend, kneel, reach, climb stairs and carry equipment or young children up to 25 pounds in weight. Uses hands to grasp, handle or feel. Visual acuity is required to read data on a computer monitor. Ability to operate keyboard driven equipment. Must be able to travel to various school locations across Fairrfax county. . Ability to complete CPR BLS training and demonstrate resuscitation techniques in an emergency. Position frequently communicates and must be able to exchange accurate information with others verbally and in writing. All duties are performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
