Deaf Educator

The Deaf Educator, also known as a Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) teacher, is responsible for creating and implementing educational plans for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, using various communication methods to facilitate their learning.  

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

An individual who holds this position is required to: 

  • Fluency in manual communication; ability to understand and use ASL and English in appropriate modes of communication.
  • Participates as an effective team member across all settings in a manner that promotes collaboration for student success by carrying out team decisions as assigned, contributing relevant information and assisting with planning, problem solving, and decision making.
  • Creating individualized education programs (IEPs) and adapting teaching strategies to meet each student's unique needs.
  • Working closely with speech therapists, audiologists, and other educators to provide a comprehensive support system for students.
  • Creating an inclusive and supportive classroom where students feel valued and can thrive.
  • Modifying lesson plans and materials to accommodate the specific needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Instructing students on the use of specialized equipment and technologies to enhance their learning and communication.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Education/Experience

Valid Missouri Teaching Certificate Special Education K-12

Masters in Deaf Education K-12
