Andersen

PCS Tax Intern

June - August 2023 • McLean, VA

What I liked

I loved the work environment that Andersen creates for its interns and associates. I was given the opportunity both summers I interned with Andersen to work on real client projects and sit in on client calls with partners. I learned so much through working hands-on with the tax software and materials. However, the internship wasn't all work and no play- interns were given many opportunities to network and socialize with current employees at happy hours, sporting events, and other social outings. Had I not had this internship, I would not have learned that I wanted to pursue a career in tax and genuinely enjoyed the work I do.

What I wish was different

Advice

If you are trying to decide whether the tax industry is for you, I cannot recommend Andersen enough! The work that interns do is the work that associates do as well, and the internship taught me many valuable skills that have helped me in my college classes. This includes an increased proficiency in Excel and the ability to learn new software quickly.

What I liked

Andersen is a great firm that truly cares about the development of their interns. When I started the internship, I was assigned 3 buddies in my service line that were great mentors and super helpful throughout my experience. They gave constructive feedback on work and allowed me to make mistakes in a comfortable environment while I learned more about alternative investment fund accounting practices.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is being authentic and genuine in your interview!

What I liked

I loved how as an intern, I was able to do real client work and get real-life experience. Andersen does an outstanding job of ensuring their interns create relationships with everyone in the office, including the partners. During my internship, I had a buddy and a career advisor to help guide me. I constantly felt encouraged, and everyone was always willing to answer my questions. In terms of hours, I really enjoyed the flexibility. The social events were also so fun. I made lifelong friends during this internship. The company culture is fantastic, and Andersen is a great place to work.

What I wish was different

Advice

Take advantage of all the networking opportunities! Also, take advantage of the opportunity to try different things during your internship. It's easy to get comfortable with something in a specific service line, but I encourage you to try and do as many different things as possible.

What I liked

I enjoyed my time working with Andersen. I liked that I had different types of projects that I worked on, and I often worked with other interns, associates, managers, and just myself. My managers were very personable, and they made me feel comfortable working with them. Each month, I liked that the managing directors took different groups of interns out to lunch, so it was a great way to meet other managers and interns. There were also fun events that the interns were invited to. Overall, I enjoyed my work and the people at Andersen, and I look forward to returning as an associate!

What I wish was different

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for work to do! I often asked my managers and associates if they needed help with anything, and often times I was able to help or was able to start the next project.

What I liked

I enjoyed the stewardship program. The buddy system helped me learn more about the tax industry and what a tax accountant does. I also liked the hybrid system in place. You go in 3 out of 5 days a week giving you the best of both worlds being able to make connections and being at home during the week.

What I wish was different

The program has you receive your work from your buddy or mentor so the work load fluctuates.

Advice

Network! You meet great people at Andersen!

What I liked

I loved how excited everyone was to meet and help answer any questions I had. I immediately felt a part of the family, and had a great time despite the beginning of the internship being online. I met people at all levels of the firm, and even partners took the time to get to know me. The other interns were all amazing, and we all helped each-other with everything. We were all given a buddy and career advisor in the firm, and both helped me tremendously every day of my internship. The HR team was also extremely helpful, and helped us learn and get the most out of the internship. They also created many fun events that helped us (interns) meet people at the firm. I loved all of the activities, and I especially enjoyed the country-wide intern meet-up event. Every week was fun and interesting in new ways, and I loved everyone at the firm so much that I am going to work at Andersen full-time after graduation.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to go in to the office more, but the pandemic forced the beginning of the internship to be online.

Advice

Do not be afraid to reach out to people and ask lots of questions. Everyone is honest about their experiences, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much people wanted to help me.

What I liked

I really enjoyed my time at Andersen! One of the things that really stood out to me during the internship was just how friendly and supportive people at the company were. Everyone was willing to help and offer their advice when possible, be it newly hired associates or even managing directors at the company. I also enjoyed the various social events the HR Team had planned for interns. This really enhanced the internship experience as it enabled us to interact with other interns and get to know professionals at the company. I would highly recommend this internship if you are looking for a supportive culture and strong mentorship in the tax or valuation fields.

What I wish was different

Advice

Ask to work on as many projects as you can. This will provide you with countless opportunities to meet various individuals at the company and enhance your technical skills. Don’t be afraid to ask for help either as everyone at Andersen is really approachable and wants to see you succeed! I would also recommend utilizing events such as InternConnect and mixers, as well as your buddies/mentors to really enhance your internship experience and get to know everyone at the company better.

I liked meeting all the great professionals and learned about their individual experiences at the firm!

What I wish was different

Due to COVID-19, the internship was changed to virtual. Although I had an amazing experience, I wish it was in person.

Advice

Take the time to meet everyone at the firm. Schedule coffee chats and get to know them!

What I liked

My experiences at Andersen were absolutely amazing. A big component to why I chose Andersen over many other firms was my interaction with the people who make Andersen the firm that it is. The interview process seemed more like a genuine conversation than a means to analyze and examine my strengths and weaknesses. Their laid back atmosphere was so incredibly welcoming and inviting. It was the best interview experience I have had thus far. During my internship I met so many awesome and wonderful people. Everyone, from the newly hired associates to the top management, were so approachable and ever ready to offer their help and advise. I would highly recommend Andersen to any student who is considering a career in Tax.

What I wish was different

I wish my internship experiences took place in the complete absence of Covid-19. I would have gotten to personally know the amazing team at Andersen.

Advice

Andersen will treat you as a genuine person and a valuable team member. This removes the natural sense of anxiety a student may have during the internship process. When going to the interview, just relax and have an authentic conversation with the great people who will want to get to know you better. After the interview process has occurred and you receive an email from them with an offer, know that you will be in great hands. They will teach you everything you need to know.

What I liked

I have learned so much about the tax field during my time here at Andersen. I am staffed on a wide range of engagements from individuals to corporations that have allowed me to build on my technical and professional skills. The staff in the Chicago office have always been welcoming and helpful in the year and a half I have interned here. I enjoy all of my engagements because the staff I work with take the time to explain what is expected of me and answer all questions at a timely manner. The feedback I receive now will help me when I start as an associate with them next summer.

What I wish was different

Advice

I recommend that you take advantage of all service lines and client work available at Andersen. We are not restricted to only working in one service line which means you will be allowed to work on individuals, partnerships, state returns, etc. throughout your internship. This will help in your decision of not only staying here, but also if you want to continue in the tax field. I know it helped in my decision and I hope it will help in yours as well.

What I liked

I have always expected internships to be full of remedial tasks. I have been working as an intern at Andersen for nearly a year now, and I would not consider a single one of the tasks I have been given remedial. I frequently work on client tax returns, and seem to learn a new portion of the tax law each day. Andersen offers many mediums to navigate the vast, changing tax law. They perpetuate a culture which encourages you to ask more experienced employees questions to clarify your own understanding of the many laws you encounter. This culture has not only facilitated my own profession development, but has also given me the opportunity to form friendships with those I work with. My time at Andersen has been incredibly positive, and I would highly recommend this internship.

What I liked

Interns did the same tasks as what entry-level full time employees do. You can be exposed to the actual tax accounting world. They give many different types of training, such as about old and new tax laws, how to utilize technology tools and software, etc. You will do researches how to implement and apply new tax laws according to client's situation, and will make initial tax returns which will be reviewed by senior associates. You will learn a lot during your internship.

What I wish was different

There were too many training sessions, which did not allow me to have enough time to work on client cases which I was assigned on.

Advice

Their facilities are very clean and updated. You will have your own desk, a laptop, and big monitors. They always provide variety kinds of snacks. You also will be invited to multiple happy hours. You will have FUN!

What I liked

I loved the experience and the networking. Working in a professional setting to use the skills I learned at UVU to help me excel was a great experience.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would have understood more of what I wanted to do in the future and focused more on the networking rather than the grades I was receiving.

Advice

Network Network. Network!!! It is the most beneficial thing that you can do to get ahead of the crowd and find your dream job.

Tax Services Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I thought that this internship was very valuable. I really liked how there was a good mix of opportunity to work with clients and also to do non-client faced work to simply learn more about the subject matter. Also, the management did an extremely good job of working with interns and helping them succeed.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish would have been different is that there was sometimes a little too much free time. Because summer is not the tax busy season, the office is not always super busy. Thus, sometimes, especially on Fridays, interns are left without much work to do.

Advice

One piece of advice I would give about this experience is to just really be open to learning. There is a lot of challenging material and thus you have to have an open mind and be willing to learn. If you have this mindset, this internship can be very valuable.

What I liked

I liked the open-door policy. I was able to interact with everyone from the office including the managing partners and directors with no hesitation. The formal training was helpful as it directly correlated to the projects we were assigned. We worked on actual client work and learned a lot of tax compliance. Also, InternConnect was an amazing event to get to know the firm and other offices. Lastly, the culture is great at Andersen.

What I wish was different

None really, it was a fantastic opportunity and I'm very excited to join the Boston office as an Associate upon graduation.

Advice

Keep an open mind, I never thought tax would be so engaging and interesting. Also, make sure to learn about other services within the firm and interact with as many people as possible.

Tax Accountant Intern

June - August 2018 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I had many opportunities for hands on work experience and was given many responsibilities even though I had never taken a tax class before. All of the other employees at the office were very kind and happy to help me with any questions I had. The company-sponsored trip to Chicago for Intern Connect (a firm-wide intern conference) was really fun!

What I wish was different

I wish my workload could have been more consistent, but I understand that this was out of the firm's control and was simply a result of the seasonality nature of tax.

Advice

Never be afraid to ask questions or for clarifications! If it's truly a nice place to work, anyone would be happy to help you out.
