Mechanical Engineering Intern

May - August 2022 • Monroeville, PA

What I liked

Intern/co-op work that was akin to typical work done by full-time employees. Projects were actually important and interesting to the company, so I didn't feel like I was wasting my time on pointless projects or busy work. I was integrated into a full team of engineers that I worked with and supported. Coworkers are helpful and open to answering whatever questions come up. There were opportunities to meet and interact with the other interns that I wouldn't meet during work.

What I wish was different

Summer terms are very short and this experience suffered a bit from the timeframe. I didn't feel like I had enough time to get fully used to working there before I had to prep to leave again. All of my coworkers were great; however, I didn't feel like I got enough support/ beginning information from the HR department. I had a lot of questions before my first day that I didn't receive the answers to. Several of my emails to my HR contact went unanswered.

Advice

Be prepared to be incredibly overwhelmed in the beginning. There is a lot of company specific information to pick up and not all of it makes sense the first time around. This is true for all new employees regardless of previous work experience. Coworkers are fully aware it is a difficult transition and willing to help with whatever you need, so make sure to lean on them as necessary. You are paired with an experienced employee to help you with the transition, but everyone is available to answer questions.

Mechanical Engineer Co-op

May - August 2022 • Monroeville, PA

What I liked

I love the people at BPMI. I met so many amazing people that were more than willing to help me with anything I could ever need. Everyone there really is there for you and wants you to learn as much as possible.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have gotten my projects a little earlier. I was given a first project that I finished a few weeks in then stagnated for a little while until I was given a couple more projects. I wish there was something larger that I could have worked on the entire summer. The smaller projects were very gratifying to finish though.

Advice

This job is not always the most thechnical. There are times where you are doing a lot of writing and or trouble shooting. While there, do not be afraid to ask questions. 100% of the people there will be more than willing to answer.

Project Analyst Intern

June - August 2020 • Monroeville, PA

What I liked

I have nothing but good things to share about this internship. I did meaningful work with a great team and great leadership. I was accepted immediately into the group and the culture was very welcoming to questions. I was even featured in a department newsletter to let my coworkers know more about me.

What I wish was different

The hardest part about the internship was the disruptions from COVID-19. The interns and co-ops were supposed to go on a site trip out to Virginia but that did not happen, plus we were not always in the office at the same time as our coworkers. Because of the nature of the work, this made it difficult to set meetings. Both interns ended up with a part time schedule instead of full time so that we could do all our work in person.

Advice

Get ready to learn! Take notes, do not be afraid to ask questions or admit you have not grasped something yet.

I graduated from the University of Dayton in May of 2018 and started at BPMI in July. The work is meaningful and I appreciate being a part of the company's mission.
