I was given the opportunity to meet with department heads via virtual coffee chats and it made me feel more welcomed and comfortable. I also enjoyed the nature of my work and having the opportunity to learn about the different centers within human resources.

What I wish was different

My entire experience was positive.

IT

June - August 2021 • Cambridge, MA

What I liked

I appreciated the networking opportunities, integration with real meetings, combination of technical and personal skills development, and insight into how a business really works in the realm of technology. I also loved how socially conscious Biogen is and their attentiveness to employee's wellbeing.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship was not remote so I had the opportunity to get to know other interns since I worked with all full-time employees.

Advice

Ask lots of questions to get some real insight into what it's like working for that company. This can include how to work on projects you're interested in, future outlook of work at the company for those in technology, and how to communicate the work you are doing effectively to those less familiar with your field.

Neuromuscular Development Intern

June - August 2020 • Cambridge, MA

What I liked

I really loved working with Biogen -- everyone I met was very willing to teach me about their role in the company and how they got there. Everyone who I met truly loved working for Biogen because Biogen is a company that truly strives to do the best for their community, especially for the patients. This love for their work made Biogen a motivating work environment that I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of.

What I wish was different

I wish it was in person! I would have loved to meet everyone I was working with face-to-face and get to have more of a hands-on role. However, I understand why it was necessary for it to be a remote internship due to COVID-19.

Advice

Don't be afraid to leave your comfort zone! Everyone is very aware that failure is a part of learning -- they'd rather see you try something and help you learn from it than for you to be stuck doing things that don't push your comfort zone.

Drug Safety Intern

June - August 2018 • Cambridge, MA

What I liked

Working at Biogen was the perfect intersection of my two interests: Public Health and Business. As a health science major and business minor at Boston University, working at a pharmaceutical company allowed me to not only use the skills I learned in my academics, but also helped me gain new skills that I could take with me to future internships and academics.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been provided with a little bit more guidance from my main manager. While she was very kind, I found that I often had to seek out guidance from other colleagues.

Advice

NETWORK. I was able to receive a return internship offer simply by showing interest. No one will say no to an intern so it is absolutely worth taking advantage of that.

Chemical Process Development Intern

June - August 2017 • Cambridge, MA

What I liked

I really liked the level of responsibility I received, it felt like forward progress carried weight and the work I was doing was exciting and full of potential. I also very much enjoyed working with older, highly educated professionals when dealing with data analysis or general career building.

What I wish was different

I wish I could every toured other departmemts in the company more thoroughly. I worked in the process chemistry department and got tours of the medicinal chemistry, formulation, and biologics divisions but there were several others I had my eye on, such as the neuroscience division.

Advice

Ask questions!!! As in well informed questions tht demonstrate genuine curiosity. In my experience, professionals or not only receptive to questions but are extremely enthusiastic in their responses. This is a good way to both learn about the industry but also form a professional relationship.

Protein and Cellular Engineering Intern

June - August 2018 • Cambridge, MA

What I liked

Working at Biogen was an incredible experience. Everyone was very friendly and passionate about their work, and the company is very patient focused. The University Relations office worked very hard to include a lot of great programming for the interns, such as lunch sessions where people from around the company came to tell us about what they do. I also worked on a project that my team is moving forward with this fall, so it was really cool to see my work contribute to the overall goal of helping patients.
