Enterprise Risk Intern

July 2021 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

Many times when you start an internship, you lack many of the necessary skills and knowledge to complete your work. Do not allow this to make you think you are unqualified or incapable, the benefit of an internship is that you can rapidly learn about working in the real world and develop these skills before a full time position. It may be hard at first, but putting in the extra effort and working with your team and manager will pay off.

Colleague Field Support Intern

May - August 2019 • Auburn Hills, MI

What I liked

Great people, plenty of cool opportunities, great place to be overall.

What I wish was different

I was not given the most technical position, felt I could have thrived at a harder position but enjoyed my time in the position I was given.

Advice

Network as much as possible. There are tons of teams at Comerica that all do very different tasks. Useful to get to know everybody as much as possible.

Intern

June - August 2019 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

I enjoyed that the internship was composed of two parts. The first half of the internship was understanding the credit underwriting center. We helped spread financial statement, complete excel models, create proformas and many other functions to understand the basics of underwriting. The second part was each intern went on to a sales group to understand what RMs or PMs do and the role they do in sales.

What I wish was different

More exposure in credit underwriting and also more exposure to what RMs and PMs do.

Advice

This is a great opportunity to start a career and great for upcoming seniors to understand more of the finance side that will help on your classes.

Technology Intern

May - August 2019 • Auburn Hills, MI

What I liked

I had the opportunity to develop code that was used directly in a core initiative for the bank. I also had exposure directly to the company's CIO, and the opportunity to create a new project from scratch which received full funding.

What I wish was different

Some of my other interns were working on projects I thought were very interesting initially, but there wasn't any formal vehicle for us to talk across projects.

Advice

The culture here is incredibly flat, you'll feel like your coworkers are a second family. Additionally, you can really push yourself as much as you want and your managers will provide you the resources you need to succeed.

Internal Audit Intern

May - August 2017 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

This position gave you flexible hours, exceptional training, and a friendly atmosphere. Not only did you get to work with some of the most talented people in the banking industry, but you get to enjoy the great city of Detroit! My team leader for each project worked very closely with me so there was always help available. The people that work there will make you feel welcome and part of the community, this includes going out in the city and experimenting a variety of restaurants. You will learn about many different branches of Comerica Inc. and how they operate. Their priority is getting each employee to the job of their desire. If you feel as if you would be a better asset in another branch, they welcome change. Great overall experience and I hope to return for full time employment in the future.

What I wish was different

Some of the time, I felt as if I needed more to do since we had to wait on requested documents. Working on multiple assignments at a time is a must. Most of the time I was able to do this, but unfortunately sometimes waiting is the only option.

Advice

One requirement for this position is that you are a quick learner. For each audit that you are assigned you must be able to identify the strategies and understand the process put in place. Each of the assignments will entail a new process. This is one part that I did love as well, since there is always something new. Another piece of advise is to never hesitate to ask for help. This position is very focused on accuracy. There is a duty to Comerica Inc. that we are doing our job, and doing it correctly.
