Youth Intern

June - August 2018 • Denver, CO

What I liked

The Denver Rescue Mission is an amazing organization that really cares about people. As for my internship, I liked how connected you were to the staff and how I didn't feel less than anyone on staff. They made sure that all the interns knew they weren't doing busy work and that what we were learning and doing mattered.

What I wish was different

I wish that we had taken classes focused on a specific topic. although all the interns were doing different things I would have liked to learn more about the other parts of working in a non-profit and what jobs are available.

Advice

Take it with an open mind. The Denver Rescue Mission offers free housing by having you stay within their shelter alongside the participants. Learn from the people you are around and just soak up every moment.

Client Services Intern

June - August 2017 • Denver, CO

What I liked

The Denver Rescue Mission's staff are wonderful and genuinely interested in and supportive of people, including the interns. I met a lot of people from very different walks of life and learned a lot by listening to their stories and engaging with them. The focus on God and making sure that He is the center of all that happens gives the organization a sense of direction and purpose. Living onsite in transitional housing added to my experience in many ways and made me more able to see what was going on in people's lives.

What I wish was different

The intern supervision and review by supervisors really varied from supervisor to supervisor.

Advice

Be ready and willing to fully engage with the people you meet! The more interested you are in them and the more you seek to build relationships, the more you will learn. And live onsite!
