Field Manager

May - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

This was one of the best and most supportive environments I've ever worked in. Additionally, I got to see the issues I was working on be impacted and change right before my very own eyes. It was an incredibly rewarding job.

What I wish was different

Some days are really tough and hard to get through, bad days are really bad days.

Advice

This is one of the most rewarding jobs in one of the best environments you will ever find, but your heart has to be in it. If you do not care about what you're doing you will not be able to get through it.

I loved the connections I made with the team, we were a huge family.

What I wish was different

The job was excruciating, they made it the best it can be but canvassing has got to be one of the most difficult jobs out there.

Advice

You need a strong will.

Canvasser

What I liked

Everyone in the office was really great I made a lot of friends and had some good conversations . The people are the only reason I stayed as long as I did.

What I wish was different

The hours are long and stressful. You have to meet a weekly quota and if you dont two weeks in a row they fire you I wasnt fired but it did make veryday increadably stressful. Then they tell you not to think about the money. It's very unstable, your with new people in a new place everyday, job security isn't really a thing, and there is a lot of turnover.

Advice

This job is emotionaly and physically taxing. You have to talk to a lot of people and deal with a lot of rejection and sometimes increadibly angy and rude people. If your not someone who can deal with that everyday for 4 or 5 hours it may be best to find a different option.

Assistant Director

July - October 2018 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I learned many aspects of HR including recruiting, interviewing, training, staff management, termination, i9 processing, payroll data entry, payroll corrections, and expense reports.

What I wish was different

I worked up to 70 hours per week, 6 days a week. Turnover was very high, most staff quit after 2 weeks.

Advice

This job will pay you less than an hourly living wage and exploit you for labor. I learned that it's ok to negotiate your salary, and work for a job that pays at least 35-40k. Know your worth and remember that you have a degree and can aim high, even if it might take a few months.

What I liked

Experience in grassroots organizing is not only educational, but inspiring.

What I wish was different

My one wish was for more transparency and the ability to understand the inner workings of the organization faster than picking it up on the job.

Advice

Everyone should experience grassroots organizing for at least one cause they find important (or one they might not find important) if not to make a change, then at least to have the experience of working with truly passionate people.
