Green Chimneys

General Counselor

June 2019 • Brewster, NY

What I liked

I like working with the kids and making them laugh. They brightened my day and made working there tons of fun. Some days we would chase each other and have water fights and others it would just be relaxing in the shade playing cards.

What I wish was different

I wish I could’ve spent more time with the younger kids. At the beginning of the summer I was a counselor for the older kids, they were mainly in middle school. But after moving around a bit, I found that I work better with the younger kids who are mainly 5-6 years old. I had so much fun with them and I wish it could’ve lasted longer.

Advice

Get to know how the kids work as a group and individually. It will take some time to understand the group dynamic but it is worth it and in the end you’ll have some great experiences with them.

Therapeutic Recreation Intern

June - September 2017 • Brewster, NY

What I liked

I loved getting to know the residents and creatively helping them reach their goals. The recreation team at GC is also incredible and supportive of their interns! I felt like a valued member, and I could go to anyone to bounce recreation ideas off of them. The free housing and $50 weekly food stipend was also a nice bonus!

What I wish was different

I wish we could have done more activities with the farm on campus, but I understand that it is part of a different program.

Advice

Go in there with goals, an open mind and don't be afraid to ask questions! You are steering your internship, the other CTRS' are just there to help you navigate along the way! Also, if you don't mind working at a place where every day is different and structure is sometimes non-existent, GC will be a fine place for you!
