Hispanic Federation

Federal Policy Intern

May - December 2021 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I liked how immersive the experience was. Our superiors trusted interns with important work that would have a significant impact on the work the organization does. I also enjoyed how professional everyone is, but also willing to get to understand how your life experiences shape your drive to do important policy work.

What I wish was different

I wish we had been in person during the internship, however, this was impossible because of the pandemic.

Advice

I would say lean into the policy issues you are unfamiliar with, stay up to date on the news, and come in with an open mind. This internship is fast-paced, so make sure you can set aside some time to check in with yourself. Finally, don't be afraid to ask questions!

Federal Policy Intern

January - May 2022 • Washington, DC

What I liked

If you want to know whether you would enjoy working in advocacy or in a non-profit setting, then the semester-long internship at Hispanic Federation is for you. As an intern, you will get exposure to a broad range of policy issues including housing, healthcare, environmental, immigration, and economic policy. On a weekly basis you will get to attend coalition meetings, learn how to track legislation, and work alongside people who are extremely passionate about their advocacy work.

Advice

My advice is to take this opportunity to expand your knowledge of legislative issues. You may feel comfortable in your knowledge of immigration policy, but if you do not understand healthcare policy or economic policy as well, it limits your ability to grasp the bigger picture. Be curious and don't be afraid to try something new!
