KPMG LLP

Intern

July - August 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

KPMG did a great job connecting us with mentors at every level of the firm within our practice, and provided us with training that provided us a solid foundation to get started.

What I wish was different

Because of COVID circumstances, the internship was shortened and made virtual, and we were not able to join the teams and participate in client-facing work. I think that KPMG did the best they could under these circumstances, but we certainly did not get the full internship experience you would see in a normal year.

Advice

I would recommend trying to meet as many people as possible, build relationships, and don't be afraid to ask questions!

IT Asset Management Intern

June - August 2021 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I was offered new experiences that broadened my knowledge and added to my experience. I was able to experience the culture and the type of people that work at the company. Everyone was kind and willing to help when needed. It was apparent that the company/its people do actually care about you and want to keep you within the company.

What I wish was different

The internship itself could have been a bit more structured. Some of the tasks specifically could have been more involved. I did not feel that I made as many significant contributions as I would've liked and felt I could have had more hands-on work. I would've also enjoyed sitting in on more calls and learning about all that goes on in the different teams that were part of my area.

Advice

Take in as much as you can. Ask as many questions as you can, the more the better (typically). Questions help clear things up and also show that you are interested and willing to learn. Take as many notes as you can, they will always be a great reference when you need clarification and can be helpful for others as well.

Audit Intern

May - August 2021 • Portland, OR

What I liked

Everything about the internship was great. They really took the time to teach and support you about the accounting world. They take the time to assign you projects that you are capable of completing, but still challenge you.

What I wish was different

While it cannot be controlled, I wish my internship was in person. It was completely remote due to the pandemic. This resulted in me feeling disconnected at times.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share is to ask questions all the time. It is important in your internship experience to make sure you get the right information to learn and see if the company is a good fit for you.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship was in person.

State and Local Government Intern

June - August 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I really liked the supportive and collaborative environment that pushed me to put my best work together. I was also able to be in a structured environment and my expectations were clearly defined for me.

What I wish was different

I wish the company was able to put on more in-person events and activities throughout the summer, which granted, may have been difficult during covid but was allowed by local ordinances.

Advice

I would say the most important thing to keep in mind is how important networking is. In order to get the next opportunity and continue your education it is important to reach out to as many professionals as possible to network and find the best opportunity for you

Audit Intern

June - August 2024 • Santa Clara, CA

What I liked

I absolutely loved how supported I felt as an intern starting out for such a huge company. Each intern had a TC, or transitional coach, who was someone within their first of second year at KPMG and was great for asking little questions and things that you may feel too scared to ask someone higher up and just someone who's been in our shoes so recently but has enough experience to help give guidance and advice. Each intern also had a PML, or performance management leader, who was higher up in the company (likely a manager or higher) who would meet with you after each engagement was complete and go over how everything was going. I found this really helpful and it made me feel very supported.

What I wish was different

There was one engagement that I was assigned to that was post-busy season and had a very small team, one manager, two associates, and two interns (including myself), and the associate that oversaw me and my tasks was strictly online and was hard to get a hold of for questions. It was just a bit isolating and lonely, so I wish that I was able to have a better relationship with her.

Advice

Everyone enjoys talking to and helping the interns. If you're in need of help or advice but are worried about being a bother to others, don't be afraid to seek it out because everyone wants to see you succeed.

Embark Scholar Intern

June - August 2023 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked the flexibility and the ability to grow my network both through my fellow interns all the way to partners. Also, I was able to see all 3 areas of public accounting which really opened my eyes to the career possibilities and mobility available to me. I originally believed I wanted to be in Audit but with my advisory rotation, I learned long term I would like to grow in this field and I created great connections.

Advice

You can make the most of your experience based on how proactive you are. Your experience is entirely on your approach.
