EH&B Service Intern

June - September 2023 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

This internship was absolutely life changing! It was the perfect introduction to the corporate world with people who genuinely wanted to help me learn and succeed. It may sound stereotypical, but the culture at this company truly blew away all of my expectations. My mentors, coworkers, and fellow interns were all excited to be there, loved what they did, and wanted to get to know me. I knew nothing about the insurance industry going into this experience, so being thrown into it was uncomfortable, however the training programs and close mentorship made it easy to get the answers I needed. The work was interesting, the events were awesome, and the people truly made me feel apart of the company, even in three short months!

What I wish was different

The one thing I wish would've been different is the National Intern Competition. While I did really enjoy this opportunity and loved getting to know interns from other offices across the country, I wish we could have worked on the project together in person and had a bit more direction about what the judges were looking for. I personally find it easier to collaborate and hold everyone accountable that way! That being said, being able to present on Zoom at the end made it feel more low-stakes overall, which was nice.

Advice

Network as much as you can! I know everyone says this, but it couldn't be more true at MMA. I set up as many informational interviews, lunch meetings, and coffee runs as I could and it paid off in the end. I met way more people than I otherwise would have, got great advice, and eventually found the position that I wanted most. If I wouldn't have networked, I definitely wouldn't have gotten the return offer I wanted. It may seem intimidating at first, but people are genuinely happy to share their experiences at the company because everyone loves it so much!

Employee Health and Benefits Intern

June - August 2023 • Walnut Creek, CA

What I liked

Interning at MMA was a fantastic experience; the West region did a great job recruiting interns from all different schools and backgrounds. Not knowing what to expect from an insurance internship, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The intern program was exceptionally well put together, allowing us to talk with and experience many different teams and corners of the Industry.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish was different was the start date for the internship for the West Region interns did not align with the other regions around the country. This led to the group project being a little tricky initially; however, by the end of the internship, we had been told they would try to resolve that for future internship classes.

Advice

As with any experience, you get out what you put in. Make sure to meet and get to know many people in the office and region, take the opportunity to network, and learn all of the different sides of the industry.

Employee Health and Benefits Intern

June - August 2023 • Aliso Viejo, CA

What I liked

This internship was incredible! The program MMA has for those looking to better sales experience, grow networks, and learn about the insurance brokerage space is a great opportunity. I loved the immense support and ability to ask tons of questions, the ability to gain advice and conduct informational interviews with individuals around the office, and the sense of community us interns felt, along with the fun activities always going on in the office. I loved the amount of new information I was able to ingest and had a great leadership team.

What I wish was different

As I was the only female intern in the office, I sometimes wished that I had another female to spend my time with and walk together through the steps of the internship. In the beginning, I also sometimes felt overwhelmed with the loads of insurance information I wasn't familiar with yet was around 24/7 - maybe if there were a crash course or way to ease interns into the terminology and practices I would have felt less overwhelmed.

Advice

Use this opportunity to grow your network and conduct informational interviews! I talked to as many people as I could throughout the couple months being in the office, from those that had been at the company for 5 months to those that had been there 10 years! I gained so much life-changing advice and got a better feel for the industry through interviewing and shadowing others.
