New York Medical College

Medical Research Intern

June - August 2019 • Valhalla, NY

What I liked

As an intern, I was able to attend research meetings with doctors so I can learn all about the process and hear about new developments in the medical field. I learned so much from going to conferences too. I got certified to be able to participate in carrying out research. The research I worked on was about environmental effects on human health, with pediatric pulmonology. I also was able to shadow in the clinic, outpatient, and inpatient. I formed great relationships with the doctors and the other interns. This was my favorite experience of the summer.

What I wish was different

I wish I lived closer to NYMC and Westchester Medical Center! But last summer, I wasn’t able to work on all of the research projects as much as I would’ve liked to because I didn’t have as much time to devote to the internship. Next summer I plan on spending more more time in the internship, and hopefully taking a leadership position for one of the projects so I can get the most out of this experience as possible.

Advice

The more you put into it, the more you get out of it. Some meetings and conferences weren’t mandatory, but I went to every one during the time I spent doing the internship, and I feel they really helped me make my decision about what I want to do in the future. Like I said in the section about what I wish had been different, put in the most time possible so you can do the most you can.
