Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2022 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed the welcoming internship experience and events the company had put on. It made me feel very welcomed and like my coworkers were good friends to me.

What I wish was different

As an electrical engineer doing a software role, I felt as if I was not given the proper guidance to succeed in my role and on my project. More help and mentorship would have been a tremendous help.

Advice

It's key to be honest about your progress on your work and ask for significantly push for help when it is needed. If you don't get what you need, push harder. Make detailed goals that lead to necessary progress and stick to them/adjust when needed.

Software Engineer

June - August 2021 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

I liked almost all aspects of this internship. The project work was interesting, and my manager was very involved in making sure I was still enjoying my work throughout the internship. There was also a good work-life balance, and people were very approachable to ask questions.

What I wish was different

I wish there was a better way to build my network with people within Qualcomm. Being a virtual experience, it was hard to interact with interns and individuals outside my team. I would have wanted events that were more involved with having interns interact with each other more directly.

Interim Engineering Intern

June - September 2021 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

Since the internship was remote and it was based on developing software, it was nice to have a bit of work hour flexibility. Additionally, my mentor and manager were very understanding of the circumstances and were very open to help me whenever I asked.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to have more engagement with my team and other interns in person, however due to the current circumstances it was understandable that this was not possible.

Advice

When you are doing a purely remote internship, it can be daunting to ask for help because it makes you feel like you are not good enough and you don't know the people you are working with in person. However, if you can get over this feeling and ask away, you'll only feel dumb for a few minutes instead of wasting time and being frustrated for hours. And at the end of the day, if you deliver on your project, people will not look back on how many questions you asked, they will look at the awesome thing you developed.

Marketing Intern

What I liked

The environment in Qualcomm. I find that Qualcomm has comfortable interpersonal relationships with different levels of superior and subordinate. All employees are experienced at their position. I can learn so much from them.

What I wish was different

Advice

For all university's students, the intern or a job will change your view of personal understanding. The working experience will tell you what you lack and the distance between you and your colleague. Then, you will have a target or direction to improve yourself.

Everything! The co-interns, the full-time employees, the mentorship program, the benefits (housing and relocation stipend) , the facility tours, the intern events (Hack-a-thon, round table discussions, networking events, demo day), the transparency, the extracurricular activities provided (surf lessons, explore the city, volunteer events), and work-life balance.

Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Boulder, CO

What I liked

The projects I worked on were technically rigorous and legitimately meaningful. The nature of the work also matched my interests in the field. Pay was great. And there are so many positions in different disciplines within Qualcomm pertaining to computer hardware and software engineering, and telecommunications.

What I wish was different

Location, I'd rather have worked at their headquarters in San Diego, where most of the other interns were. Instead I was placed at a small remote office in Boulder with only a few other interns. If you are accepted earlier, you'll be offered more choice in where you'll be placed. I was given an offer in mid April.

Software intern

May - August 2019 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

Basically everything. I interned with wireless research and development this summer. I loved my project. It was challenging, fun, and useful to the team. My team was amazing. They treated my questions, ideas, and code seriously. They were also super accepting, supportive, and candid. WRD department as a whole is a great place to work in. It's like a startup within a big company and while you can work on exciting technologies and not worry about the resources, you can still have a close relationship with your coworkers. I was able to schedule multiple 1:1 with my directors, manager, team lead to provide my feedback and learn from them.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship program can continue using the mentorship gateway because that's how I managed to connect with engineers in the R&D side of the company and score an internship with them

Advice

Communication and teamwork is really important. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask.
