Information Systems Intern

June - August 2022 • Springfield, VA

What I liked

I was able to work from home and essentially make my own schedule. My manager did not micromanage the work that I had to accomplish while there. I was able to work with scrum masters and senior IT member support in order to learn more about how back end IT works

What I wish was different

I wish the program was more organized and offered full-time positions to those who applied when the program ended.

Advice

Make sure to work hard so that you stand out to managers and other team members

Digital Marketing Intern

June - August 2022 • Secaucus, NJ

What I liked

Everyone I worked with was extremely kind, helpful, friendly, and relaxed. It was a great working environment and company culture, and every employee was respected and valued.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to work in a role more similar to my degree (Computer Science), and I wish I had started earlier.

Advice

One piece of advice is that experience is experience. Even though I am a Computer Science major and I was doing Digital Marketing, I still got the experience of working for a very successful company, and learned what the corporate life is like.

Biology Laboratory Assistant

May 2021 • Erie, PA

What I liked

ACL provides excellent experience for those perusing a biology, chemistry, or biochemistry degree. The greatest benefit from working at ACL is getting experience to put on your resume. It provides a significant advantage when applying for high paying jobs after graduating.

What I wish was different

The laboratory assistant position requires a 6 week training on first shift, so having time in the summer to complete this training is necessary. I wish that there was an option for training on second shift for those who do not have morning availability for 6 weeks.

Advice

If you are interested in the laboratory assistant position, especially in the microbiology department, know that the first two weeks of training may be overwhelming with all the information you need to know, but you will pick up on the procedures quickly. You always have a team of at least 2-3 people working with you so you can always ask questions!

Operational Excellence

June - August 2021 • Clifton, NJ

What I liked

I was fortunate to meet lots of high-level employees and learn a lot about an industry in which I did not have lots of previous experience.

What I wish was different

Due to COVID, they made a late decision in having interns, so they did not have a fully planned schedule for us.

Advice

Engage with your supervisors and build those connections. Be assertive in asking to learn about areas of the company that were not on the schedule.

Client Service Representative

April 2019 • Lenexa, KS

What I liked

I liked how I got experience in a professional setting and got to work with very accomplished people.

What I wish was different

I wish the training was shorter.

Advice

If you have your evenings off, this job is perfect for you. They paid a very good amount of my school tuition and I recommend anyone who wants real life experience and tuition paid to work here.

Lab associate

August 2019 • San Juan Capistrano, CA

What I liked

I like that it’s a full time, real job where I can learn about Molecular Genetica to prepare for my future goals.

What I wish was different

I wish it would have pertained more directly to the job that I one day hope to have, but it is still a foot in the door.

Advice

Take the risk. I moved across the country for my job and it’s one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.

Temporary Administrative Assistant

May - August 2019 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I loved seeing a different side of medicine. When one gets a sample taken, it gets sent off to labs like Quest for diagnostic testing and most people never give it a second thought. Everyone I worked with was super interested in educating me about their department, field and experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have continued part time through the school year!

Advice

Don't be afraid to reach out and ask people you know in your field for advice or anything!

mechanic assistant

June - August 2019 • Mobile, AL

What I liked

The hands on experience working on engines were amazing. The people were so patient and kind. They treated me like family. The customers were extremely friendly.

What I wish was different

I wish it was paid position. The experience was great, but it didn’t help me pay bills.

Advice

Definitely find a paid position if you can. I also learned summer classes are so much harder with a job. Summer classes move fast and cover a lot of materials in a short time. Don’t wait until the last minute to get help. If you don’t understand a concept, go see your professor as soon as you can.

What I liked

More experience to practice blood draws. Got to learn about many of the different tests and how they are tested. Working with people of all walks of life.

What I wish was different

Got to work more with coworkers. Got to learn even more about the tests and how tests are performed on blood, urine, and stool. Next year I would like to work with the microbiology division and learn or perform tests.

Business & Marketing Intern

June - August 2019 • Marlborough, MA

What I liked

I enjoyed the real-life experience this internship gave me, and the fact that I worked with real professionals. Everyone there was very welcoming and kind, and I feel as though I learned a lot about the operations of such a large company.

What I wish was different

There were no other interns at my location, as most of them were in New Jersey at the main business headquarters so I missed out on some intern events that were held in New Jersey. That was really the only downside of the internship - I greatly enjoyed the experience

Advice

Take it seriously and ask a lot of questions. That is the best way to learn things, and even if the industry seems daunting, I promise you will learn as you go.
