Marketing and Events Intern

What I liked

Overall, this internship program was amazing! The internship kicks off with an internship retreat in Dallas lead by Campus Recruiting, and it's a great way to learn more about Ryan from employees, have onboarding with different teams like IT and Payroll, and network with other interns. My manager was super flexible and I was able to work hybrid. I interned with Marketing and Events, and felt very welcome on my first day of the internship. The culture and values at Ryan are present every day, one example being the awesome opportunity of being able to serve the community on RyanShares Day. You are welcomed with a RyanBuddy, which is an employee who is there to help you with anything! The work and projects my manager and team gave me was always meaningful and beneficial work, which made this internship feel so rewarding.

What I wish was different

Advice

Ask as many questions as you can! Your manager and team are there to support you and teach you about the practice area you are interning in. In the end, these two months are very rewarding and beneficial towards your future!

Personal Property Compliance Intern

What I liked

Overall, I had a great experience this summer. I worked a lot more with the CRE team because I am a real estate major, but all the work I did was similar to what we learn in school. I liked the fact that the work we did was impactful work, sometimes it felt like busy work, but overall I think that in someway it would be impactful. I also enjoyed the work culture. Everyone in the office was so welcoming and there were a lot of people who came into the office instead of working from home. I never felt bad for asking questions, and when I did everyone was very nice and super helpful. Lastly, I enjoyed the intern retreat to Dallas. It was a great first impression of the company and a really fun trip. Overall, I think that the work we did was great experience in seeing the different approaches to valuation.

What I wish was different

I am not sure I would change much. Maybe to allow interns to experience more client interactions or to experience the appeal process.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions! Ask anyone anything and I am sure they would be more than happy to help. Don't say no to any project. Every project is experience and you can learn something from everything you do.

What I liked

I had the incredible opportunity to intern at Ryan LLC in NYC this summer, and it was truly a transformative experience for my career. Throughout my time there, I learned an immense amount about my practice, gaining valuable insights and hands-on experience that will undoubtedly shape my future endeavors. The professional relationships I built with my colleagues were exceptional, fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment that motivated me to excel. My mangers guidance allowed me to thrive and explore my potential to the fullest, and they always answered all my questions! The feedback and constructive criticism they provided were instrumental in my growth and development as a professional. Overall, my internship with Ryan left me with a profound sense of gratitude for the knowledge gained and the remarkable people I had the pleasure of working with. Sales and Use Tax Intern

What I liked

Very welcoming environment with great coworkers. The intern retreat was an amazing experience and the resource pool was very strong. The work culture is very pressure-free and not overbearing. There is a strong sense of trust within my team and I had independence in my work while having resources to reach out to. Learning Sales and Use Tax also enabled me to be exposed to programs and software that I had no idea about but now have a proficiency/knowledge in. Overall, a great experience where good relationships were formed between coworkers with good exposure to tax processes, as well as skills applicable in and out of the field.

What I wish was different

The internship had points where there wasn't a large workload, leaving me to have some empty time on my hands. Maybe a steadier stream of assignments would've maximized my time here better. Never did I feel swamped by the workload.

Advice

You don't have to have expertise in accounting/tax to grasp the contents of this job. Sales and Use Tax may sound niche on the surface, but even being a Marketing and Business Analytics Major I was able to get into the groove of the work easily, and I found skills/resources that applied to my studies. In sum, you can learn a lot from this internship without needing to be an accounting/finance major.

Sales and Use tax

What I liked

The culture at Ryan can't be beat. The team was always extremely helpful and welcoming and Garrett was an amazing manager who was always checking in. The work, itself, was rewarding and kept me busy throughout my time here. I also really enjoyed the hybrid schedule of just Tuesdays and Thursdays in office, as it added some face to face time as well as time at home. Also, very fun retreat to Dallas to kick off the internship and network. Overall, great experience.

What I wish was different

Not too much in all honesty. If I had to say something it would be to spread out the three coach calls a bit better, which would be difficult however due to the Ryan break we have towards the end of the internship.

Advice

Ask a lot of questions, take notes on what you are doing, and ask for more work when you are done with a task. Some things will be tedious, like any job, but stay focused as much as possible to add value to your team.

Platform Sales & Marketing Intern

What I liked

This internship was a fantastic way to learn what the corporate world has to offer and was a great way for me to learn if I wanted to work in this area. Ryan ensures that interns are properly equipped with the resources they need to achieve success and attain knowledge. I was constantly learning new things and would always have someone to go to if I had a question or needed to talk through an idea. I also had training beforehand to get me comfortable with tax concepts since I did not have a strong background in tax. Everyone was so welcoming and the environment was incredibly positive! I felt like part of my team from the get-go!

What I wish was different

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions! Managers and people on your team do not expect you to know everything- they want to see you be proactive and ask questions. This internship is truly a learning experience and asking questions helps to make the most of it!

Property Tax Consulting Intern

What I liked

Loved the internship program and experience. From day 1, I felt very welcomed and loved how the teams are not isolated and are able to work with each other. Throughout the first few weeks, we had consultants come and train us on different aspects of the job which gave us valuable information to tackle the learning curve and also made it easier for us to meet the team. Integrating into the company culture was smooth and felt natural. Good mix of independence and teamwork! The work I did was impactful from the first week, which was a pleasant surprise! Being able to tag in a multiple different projects was a great way to learn what the consultant position does and gives a better overview on the company itself. Throughout the summer, I felt like a valuable asset to the company and the managers have made it a great experience for us as well. The Practice Leader, Shane Moncrief, had his office close to 3 of us interns, which gave us a chance to speak to him with numerous times. I enjoyed the campus recruiting team being a big part of our summer. They would check in with us every week during the intern calls to give us updates and guest speakers throughout. The CEO, Brint Ryan, came to talk to us during one of these calls and gave us great insight on his company and how he was able to do what he did. The intern retreat was enjoyable as well and took place a week prior to the internship officially beginning. It was a great event and helped bond the team in Dallas before everyone went out to their respective offices. Overall, very satisfied with the internship and have learned a lot from what we've done so far! Would recommend the Property Tax Commercial side to those that are interested in real estate valuation and appraisals. That being said, fields in statistics, finance, accounting, MIS, data analytics, etc are all great fits for this position.

What I wish was different

For me, it was expected for us to be in the office 5 days a week, which I was happy about until the Atlanta commute/traffic began to take a toll on me. We had the opportunity to be remote, but generally needed them to be approved first with a valid reason for it to happen. I think a 3/2 or 4/1 of office days and remote days would've been ideal for me, but just a very very small thing I would have changed based on my role. I think that being in the office everyday helped me continue to focus on my work and gave us more opportunities to meet and build relationships with new people in the office.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for help when you are confused or have too much on your plate, everyone here is willing to help or will find someone else who can. Also make sure to take initiative and look for work when you have capacity. This internship is mostly hands-off (no micro-managing) and is what you make of it. There are many resources available to you, so use them and learn more about the field!

Credits & Incentives Intern

What I liked

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a Credits & Incentives Intern at Ryan. The people I have met, experiences that I have had, and the knowledge that I have gained in these past 2 months are invaluable. Everyone in the Pittsburgh Office was incredible and I really enjoyed working alongside them everyday. A big reason why I would say my internship was successful was because of the daily communication between my manger and the consultants on my team who really helped guide and develop my knowledge of credits & incentives.

What I wish was different

The only thing that I wish had been different was with the Group Case Study. My group found the directions quite unclear and it required a lot of attention from our mentor.

Advice

Keep a journal for personal growth and complete your work in a timely manner and always ask what else you can do for your manger or your team.

Sales and Use Tax Intern

What I liked

Everything at Ryan is hands on work, and no busy work. I have had past internships where I am given small tasks just to keep me busy. But at my internship with Ryan every tasks I was given was either to expand my knowledge with taxation, or actual work that contributes to my teams success. This was very beneficial for when I decide to take my full-time offer, because I knew what my day to day tasks would look like.

What I wish was different

Ryan does have weekly internship meetings, however they were all over zoom. I wish instead of this or possibly in addition to this the first week of the internship they would have all the interns at one location and have a training camp. This would allow interns to get to know each other and also allow for a more hands on better training experience in my opinion.

Advice

Ask questions about the life cycle of the projects, because it gives you a better idea of why you are doing the tasks you are doing. No matter what job you end up taking rather that is at Ryan or elsewhere the Microsoft office suites are important to know how to operate so spend time getting to know those applications.

They gave me so many opportunities to learn about the industry even though we were partly locked down because of COVID-19. I had half of my summer in the office and the other half online but I was still able to communicate with them easily and constantly learn new things!

Don’t be afraid to ask all your questions! Employers love to answer your questions and it shows them you care about expanding your knowledge on whatever subject!

Property Tax Intern

What I liked

The campus recruiting team made the recruiting and onboarding experience easy. They worked tirelessly to guide and advise every intern through the entire internship, taking time to coach and lead. Once on a team, the integration process was streamlined and you are given as many opportunities as possible to learn the practice. There were analysts, consultants, and managers to reach out and they all were available to help. At Ryan, the culture is one of the best attributes of the firm which makes it an incredible place to work.

What I wish was different

Nothing. The whole experience was rewarding.

Advice

If you are interested in being part of a well respected and global tax firm then Ryan is the place for you. Be prepared to work hard and learn.

Sales and Use Tax Consultant

What I liked

I really enjoyed the culture of the firm and the people that were on my team.

What I wish was different

I have nothing that I would change from my experience. The only thing that was an issue was when I was going through the interview process, they only wanted me to go into sales and use tax when I wanted to go property tax. This is only because I am a Finance and Accounting Major and they want anyone with accounting to go sales and use. In my offer they were very accommodating and gave me the option to work in property tax in the city I desired.

Advice

If you are interested in tax I would put Ryan, LLC. at the top of your list with the Big Four. The work-life balance is much better from what I've heard and they promote mostly from within.

I really appreciated the flexibility to work remote due to the pandemic and the great communication between myself and the Campus Recruitment team, my team, and the leadership team. I also loved the work culture at Ryan and the interaction I had with my team.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have met my team in person and visit the Houston office.

Advice

Ask as many questions as you can in the beginning, no matter how simple they may sound. Do not be afraid to look dumb for asking questions because no one expects you to know much in the beginning. By asking lots of questions, you will understand the process better and better understand how to do your tasks as well as troubleshoot when you reach inconsistent data.

I loved the work environment I was in and the people I worked with! I always felt safe to ask questions and truly learned from my co-workers. They were always willing to help me out when I had questions and took the time out of their day to walk me through what every day in the life of a Property Tax Consultant looked like! They care so much for their interns and made me feel like I truly belonged in the company!

What I wish was different

During my time as an intern, COVID-19 happened and halfway through it we were moved 100% online. That made things a little less exciting but my co-workers and supervisors kept us engaged and busy throughout those trials as well! It made it much easier and more fun to work from home!

Advice

Always ask questions!!! Remember you are an intern and they don't expect you to know everything. Sometimes one of the only ways of learning it is to ask questions!

What I liked

Every single person that I worked with was so welcoming and willing to help. The internship program itself was very organized and the recruiters were great and helpful. I liked the fact that everyone at Ryan loves all the interns and really appreciate all the work they do. I was also able to get some hands-on experience that gave me an idea of what it would be like as a full-time consultant. Overall, it was a great learning experience!

What I wish was different

I would not change anything about the internship itself. Any issues that I would have changed were a result of Covid-19; for example, not meeting the whole time and not getting to know other interns.
