I was able to make my own hours and come and go as I pleased.
What I wish was different
I wish it was for a longer period.
Advice
Reach out to as many P.I.s as possible, if you are hoping to get a similar role.

What I liked
It was amazing! I worked in the neuroscience lab of Dr. Seth Tomchik. He was very personable and friendly. He was a great teacher and his lab was great. I even went to some seminars on campus.
What I wish was different
It would have been nice to have GRE prep classes because a lot of us in the program were studying for the GRE.
Advice
Don’t be afraid to ask questions! In fact if you don’t ask questions, people will assume you either aren’t interested in the work, or fully understand the work.

What I liked
Flexible schedule, lots of collaboration, professional meetings
What I wish was different
The weekly seminar organized by the program is slightly out of place. I wish they chose their guest speaker more carefully.
Advice
Be prepared to conduct full time research and also be ready to be challenged about your past career goals.

What I liked
The environment was very collaborative, helpful, and friendly. I was given a project to do by myself but had guidance whenever needed and did not get looked down on when I asked for help. The location was also amazing and the interns were constantly bonding.
What I wish was different
I wish they were more communicative of what to expect before the internship started. We showed up with very little idea of what we were going to be doing and what time working hours would be like.
Advice
This experience gave me my first research project to work on by myself. Through this project I gained skills that will be with me for the rest of my life as well as a network of colleagues to collaborate with.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

What I liked
I really enjoyed the hands-on learning experiences and training that my lab team spent on introducing me to the research we are studying. Everyone made a genuine effort in integrating me into the team so that I could continue my lab responsibilities independently.
What I wish was different
Advice
I would advise to always be engaged and constantly asking questions to your lab team to show your interest and convey that you want to learn more and have an independent role on the team.

Research intern
June - August 2019 • San Diego, CA
What I liked
I liked the flexibility of it and the graduate students who were in the lab. It was a very professional and inspiring experience.
What I wish was different
I wish I had fellow interns closer to my age to befriend and connect with!
Advice
I would share that you should always try out what you want to and not give up! I got rejected from so many summer research internships because of lack of experience but I persevered and made it my mission to find one anyways.
