Supply Chain Intern

June - September 2021 • Auburn, WA

Professional working environment, clear work objectives and assignments, real-world and interesting projects, networking abilities, tours of facilities, application of education

What I wish was different

Advice

Make the most of your internship by taking on as many projects as you can and always say yes; you never know what will come of it.

Software Engineering Intern, Cabin & Network Applications Team

June - September 2021 • Everett, WA

What I liked

What I liked the most about my internship experience was the amount that I learned about connected a user-facing interface to backend structures. As an intern on the Cabin and Network Applications team, I: - constructed an Angular billing component for user-facing web service, enabling employees to retrieve and modify data (livestream hours and amount of data stored) of a new, in-flight cabin video monitoring service; - used Java and JavaScript, as well as HTML and CSS, to create a user interface for employees to search for a specific airline’s data; - implemented RESTful APIs in Java controller that I designed to retrieve data for the specified airline, from the backend; and - gained experience using build tools like Maven to build and update the web application with my additions

What I wish was different

I wish I had the chance to interact with other interns. I was the only intern on my team, so I primarily collaborated with my mentor, technical lead, and manager, all of whom were adults. Collaborating with other students would have given me the experience of developing solutions to challenges with someone who has had similar experiences as I did.

Advice

I would advise other interns to take full advantage of the knowledge that older team members have. Take time to sit down with other people on your team, not just your immediate mentor, to understand the path they took to get to their current position. This is very helpful as a Software Engineering intern, as there are so many lesser-known paths available to reach jobs in the industry.

Software Engineer

June - September 2022 • Tukwila, WA

What I liked

I love the team I was working with. They were very helpful in assisting me when I am stuck or confused about my assignments.

What I wish was different

The building has no windows or natural sunlight, makes the place feel bleak and empty.

Advice

Never be afraid of asking questions, even if it is a simple question as everyone knows that you are new to the company or maybe even in workforce. You are a student, and you will not know everything.

Liaison Engineering Intern

May - August 2022 • Everett, WA

What I liked

I loved getting to work in the factory environment everyday. It was surreal getting to walk inside and touch brand new airplanes on the job. I really liked the versatility of the liaison engineer role because I was exposed to all areas of the aircraft including wings, fuselage, wiring, interiors, etc. I got a chance to see what I liked and what I didn't due to the variety of exposure. All of my mentors were fantastic and I also made friends with lots of other interns over the summer. I loved my internship!

What I wish was different

I wish I had had a more long term project during my internship to be able to showcase the skills I learned. The nature of the liaison engineering job is something new everyday and I gained knowledge in many different areas, but did not have one project to culminate my experience.

Advice

Seek out new experiences and look to learn as much as you can while you are an intern at Boeing. If you have an interest in something within the company, don't be afraid to ask your manager for the opportunity to learn more about it. They are very accommodating of curiosity.

Advanced Metallic Machining Intern

May 2022 • Berkeley, MO

What I liked

My intern experience at Boeing was amazing. I have had three other past internships, and while I learned a ton at all of them, Boeing blew them all out of the water. I worked in my hometown of St. Louis Missouri as part of Boeing Research and Technology. My team was called Next Generation Metals Technology, and our goal was to develop brand new technologies and processes in metal alloy development, additive manufacturing, metal machining, and other advanced manufacturing methods. I worked primarily with the machining team, designing and conducting tests and collecting data to develop a new titanium machining process that would dramatically reduce machine runtimes. I worked on several other projects as well, requiring skills in design, manufacturing, data acquisition and analysis, and metallurgy. My favorite part of the internship was my team, which was full of amazing people who welcomed me and helped me every step of the way. Boeing also offered many intern experiences including tours of different labs and production lines on the St. Louis campus, networking events, and social events.

What I wish was different

The only thing I did not like was the process to make the transition from an intern to a full-time hire was not very well organized. I think that the process recently changed and caused some confusion.

Advice

This job was very independent, which is an environment that I tend to thrive in, but may not be suited for others. I was introduced to our team, our office and lab space, and my projects within the first two days, and then mostly left to my own devices. It was up to me to reach out to people to get my projects rolling, ask for help, and get results. I'm sure that this differs from team to team, but I really enjoyed this aspect of the internship because I had ownership of my projects, I had to get out of my comfort zone and reach out to people outside of my team, and ultimately I defined the direction I wanted to take the projects, the timeline, and the deliverables. Make the most of your limited time with a company like this and you will be rewarded.
